Ghost Notes

Ghost notes are very quiet notes, which sometimes go unnoticed by the listener. The name presumably came about because ghosts might be there but you can't see or hear them.

For an example, Chad Smith plays a lot of ghost notes on the snare drum. Despite the 'ghost' reference, you actually can hear the snare drum ghost notes on tracks like Californication by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. At the start of the song, any snare that is not on beat 2 or 4 is considered a ghost note.
