subdivisions - what are subdivisions?

Subdivisions is a general term that we use to describe various notes that are shorter than one beat, such as 8th notes, triplets, 16th notes, and all the rest. Imagine each quarter note (crotchet) beat is a slice of cake (and we normally have 4 cakes per bar). If you divide that into two with a knife, you will get two 8th notes (2 quavers). Divide those 2 slices into 4 and you will have sub divided the 8th notes into 16th notes.

Does anybody else now want cake?!
