Drum Lesson Warm Up – 6th Jan 2026

Drum lesson warm up for advanced beginners and early intermediate levels.

Since posting this, I have focussed on creating an ebook with similar content, so the title has changed a little bit and it’s now the 2nd exercise sheet of the book. You can use the image on here and print it if needed, or you can also purchase PDF of Sheet 2 – Drum Warm Up Exercises for Advanced Beginners to Early Intermediate.

This Drum lesson warm up for advanced beginners and early intermediate levels is a summary of some of the exercises I worked on today with my students. This will probably be of use to any drummers wanting some original exercises to work on as part of a drum lesson or to self learn.

There are two exercises with sextuplets, accents and the use of a paradiddle-diddle (RLRRLL).

There are exercises based on one drum beat with examples of how you can develop it.

Musical Theatre Drum Beats and fills – Sheet 5 – 40 Beats and Fills Book 2

Here is Exercise Sheet 5 from 40 Beats and Fills Exercises Book 2.

Musical Theatre drumming generally has elements of swing, jazz, big band, blues, pop and rock. Unlike jazz music – which also has the swung hi hats – there is often a prominant snare on beats 2 and 4. Sometimes the time signature changes to 3/4, 2/4 and 6/8. Much of theatre style drumming is played with swing and therefore we use many fills with triplets, because they fit in with the swing rhythm easily.

The drum beats on Exercise 3 are similar to those grand finale type songs where they are a slow to medium speed. For this, perhaps you can imagine the cliché stage show of linked arms and kicking out of the legs together in time with the music (the snare on beats 2 and 4).

In Depth Drag Technique Video Demonstration

We also look in depth on the drag technique in the video during the Exercise 3 drum fill. The video shows the correct technique for performing the bounced drag, including how to hold the stick and how to control the bounces by using varying amounts of pressure to acheive the desired bounce frequency and length.

Drum beats and drum fills in different time signatures – Sheet 4 – 40 Beats and Fills Book 2

PDF Ebook Buy Now →

Next Page: Sheet 5 →

Here is Exercise Sheet 4 from 40 Beats and Fills Exercises Book 2.

The drum beats and drum fills are played in different time signatures (3/4, 5/4 and 2/4), as well as changing to and from the usual 4/4 bar length.

Time Signature Changes: “Do not panic – they’re quite easy”, as I say in the video!

The time signatures are not too hard And sometimes you don’t even need to worry about counting them. There are situations where you might need to count them and they might be harder depending on what is contained in the bars, but thes have been written for newcomers to time signatures in mind, so there are no real suprises – it’s meant to be a straightforward introduction.

On exercise 3, I have taken away the stepped hi hat so it’s 3 way coordination. The stepped hi hat is included on exercise 3 with the 5/4 bar, so there’s an added challenge there.

Page 21 from ‘Grades 1-2 Beats & Fills Drum Book – Rock Pop Soul Funk’

Here is a free PDF of page 21 from the drum book ‘Grades 1-2 Beats & Fills Drum Book – Unit 1 – Rock Pop Soul Funk’.

The sheet music drum exercises are 2 bar loops containing drum beats with open hi hats that could fit into the styles of rock, pop, soul or funk, in a 6/8 time signature.

Once you are comfortable reading the drum beats in their repeating loops, try memorising the loop and continuing without reading it.

When teaching pupils that can cope with it, I also sometimes ask them to put emphasis on beats 1 and 4 to give it a blues feel.

Funk Grooves – Grade 5

You’ll need to be able to read the sheet music to play these funk drum grooves.

These funky beats are versatile and can be played in various scenarios or even different styles of music.

Use these funk drum beats for some new inspiration or ideas for adding flare to basic funk beats.

  1. The first beat adds accents on the hi hat to add some dynamic depth.
  2. The second beat adds in open hi hats – the hi hat should be played with the right hand only (or left if you’re a lefty).
  3. The third beat has quiet drags on the snare, slightly open hi hats and accents, and ghost note skip beats.
  4. The fourth beat has just skip beats and open hi hats.
  5. The fifth beat uses two hands for the hi hats, and the ones with the slashes through are doubled up using the double stroke technique.
  6. The sixth and final beat has a similar style to the third beat.

3 bars of drum beats in 4 with open hi hats + 1 bar fills

The drum fills now last for a whole bar, so we are now only playing 3 bars of drum beats. This prepares the student for another real world example of a different length of fill within a drum beat phrase.

You’ll need to be able to sight read these because they will be difficult to memorise. Feel free to try and memorise them if you have time, as this will also be good practice.

4 bars of drum beats in 4 with open hi hats + 2 beat fills on 4th bar

This section is only a slight a variation on the previous. The drum fills now last for two beats, which means the 4th bar only has half a bar of the drum beat. This prepares the student for another real world example of a different length of fill within a drum beat phrase.

You’ll need to be able to sight read these because they will be difficult to memorise. Feel free to try and memorise them if you have time, as this will also be good practice.

4 bars of drum beats in 4 with open hi hats + 1 beat fills on 4th bar

Much like in the first two sections, there are 16 different exercises with drum beats in 4/4. This time, the phrase is over 4 bars and there is a short drum fill on the 4th bar before repeating. You’ll need to be able to sight read these because they will be difficult to memorise. Feel free to try and memorise them if you have time, as this will also be good practice.

2 bar drum beats in 4 with open hi hats

Much like in section 1, there are 16 different exercises with drum beats in 4/4, each with open hi hats placed within the beats, but this time it’s double the length. You’ll need to read these or really work hard to memorise them to play without reading.
